How we measure ↓

This is a deliberately simple speed test. We download a 2 MB warm-up sample (discarded), then a 12 MB test sample over a single HTTPS connection to the nearest Cloudflare data center, and report the resulting bandwidth. Upload uses a single 6 MB POST to the same edge. Ping is 7 samples; we report the median and ITU-T G.1020 jitter (average inter-sample variation).

A single TCP connection is rate-limited by window-size ÷ round-trip-time. On fast links with normal latency (think 1 Gbps fiber with 30-50 ms RTT) that ceiling is roughly 150-300 Mbps. So if you're paying for a gigabit connection, our headline number will probably read lower than your plan — and lower than Speedtest.net or fast.com, which both use multiple parallel TCP connections specifically to defeat that limit.

This is a known trade-off, not a measurement error. The single-stream number is closer to what a real-world download of a single file from a single server will actually deliver — which on most household links is what you'd actually experience day to day. The "multi-stream gigabit" number is closer to what your link can do under maximum theoretical load.

If our number differs from Speedtest.net by more than 30%: try ethernet instead of WiFi, test off-peak (early morning), and compare against speed.cloudflare.com for a second opinion. Full methodology writeup →
